‘I Didn’t Even Think About Dying’: Trent Williams Opens Up About His Battle with Cancer and What Truly Mattered to Him

The San Francisco 49ers’ offensive tackle Trent Williams revealed how harrowing his cancer journey was. One of the best left tackles in the league, Williams is one of the major contributors to the 49ers’ success in the 2023 NFL season. But the athlete rose like a phoenix from the ashes to achieve what he has achieved today.

In a recent video, Trent Williams opened up about what he feared the most when he battled a rare form of skin cancer. He also revealed that it wasn’t death that feared him. Despite being an extremely private person, the 36-year-old somewhat opened up about his actual fear during this long phase of hardship.

Tidal League’s YouTube channel uploaded a video featuring Trent Williams sharing about his cancer journey. Williams, who likes to keep his life details private, highlighted how every doctor visit was tough, and the situation was getting worse following his rare form of skin cancer.

Sharing his journey, Williams said, “I didn’t even think about like dying in itself. I just thought about like the impact that they would have if that was to happen. So, I like it just it was, such a blur you know what I’m saying. And it got the diagnosis then it just every doctor visit. It kind of got worse and it got you know once they got more knowledge, because it was a very rare form of cancer. “ All that mattered to Williams was his kids. He expressed that he was fearful for his kids, and was worried about how they be if he was not there. As of September 2023, there is no record of Trent Williams’s children, making fans wonder whether the 35-year-old San Francisco 49ers offensive tackle has biological or adopted children.

Speaking of his battle against skin cancer, Williams’ condition was rare. It wasn’t anything that any doctor would deal with on a regular basis. So going undiagnosed to me, I wasn’t like, I didn’t,  I wasn’t mad about it because I just looked at it as you know as a real human thing, he added about his condition.

Williams was diagnosed with a rare skin cancer in 2019 

In 2019, during his tenure with the Washington Commanders, Williams was diagnosed with – dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP), a rare form of skin cancer. The growth had been initially discovered in 2013, but Williams claimed that the seriousness of the situation was overlooked by Washington’s medical staff. Faced with the seriousness of the situation, Williams demanded a release or trade, emphasizing the mishandling of his health.

Following the situation, Williams underwent surgeries in 2019 that included the removal of 30% of his scalp, skin grafts, and hundreds of stitches. However, Williams returned to the field after eight months, avoiding chemotherapy that would have curtailed his career. Now with the San Francisco 49ers since 2020, Williams has been an integral part of the team’s success.
