Solvay Hut, una pequeña estructura de madera situada a medio camino de la montaña Matterhorn, cerca de Zermatt, en el cantón de Valais, Suiza, reclama el título de refugio de montaña más alto del mundo, encaramado a una altitud de 4.003 metros. Su objetivo principal es ofrecer sustento y un lugar de descanso a los montañeros que conquistan el icónico Matterhorn.

Sin embargo, Solvay Hut está designado únicamente para uso de emergencia. Situado a unos 743 metros por encima del refugio Hörnli, se encuentra a 475 metros de la cima de la montaña.

Muchos escaladores que ascienden al Matterhorn hacen una breve parada en las afueras de Solvay Hut para apreciar el impresionante paisaje de la cordillera del Monte Rosa.

Los materiales del refugio Solvay, construido en 1915, se transportaban con animales de carga hasta el refugio Hörnli y luego un sistema de cables temporal facilitaba el ascenso a una altitud de más de 4.000 metros. Sorprendentemente, la construcción de la cabaña duró sólo cinco días. En 1966 fue reconstruido y en 1976 se instaló una estación telefónica de emergencia.

La cabaña está dedicada a Ernest Solvay (1838-1922), un montañero, explorador y hombre de negocios belga, que también contribuyó con fondos para su construcción.”
