“A 2,300-year-old trove of gold and jewelry, hidden in a narrow niche among broken pottery shards, was discovered in a cave decorated with stalactites. (video)”

“Three members of the Israeli Caving Club discovered a pouch filled with silver in a narrow niche within the cave. The coins, bracelets, and rings concealed in the pouch date back to the era when Alexander the Great ruled 2,300 years ago. Archaeologists speculate that these artifacts were hidden by refugees seeking safekeeping during the war that erupted following the death of Alexander the Great in 323 BC.”

“Gemstones, oil lamps, and pottery were also discovered among the stalactites. Some of the artifacts found in the cave are believed to be 6,000 years old. This discovery comes just a month after divers found 2,000 gold coins off the Israeli coast. Cave explorers in northern Israel have unearthed a treasure trove of rare silver coins and jewelry dating back to the reign of Alexander the Great. The 2,300-year-old treasures were found hidden in a narrow niche among pieces of broken pottery within the stalactite-filled cave. They were spotted by three members of the Israeli Caving Club who had squeezed through the narrow passages at the entrance of the cave to explore inside.”

“Silver coins dating from the time of Alexander the Great were found alongside bracelets, rings, and stone weights (all shown in the picture above) in a cave in northern Israel by members of the Israeli Caving Club. One of the spelunkers, Hen Zakai, spotted something shining on the cave floor, which turned out to be two ancient silver coins. Alongside the coins, the cave divers found a cloth pouch containing a handful of coins, rings, bracelets, and earrings, all made from silver and bronze. Archaeologists who visited the cave over the weekend believe that the coins were minted at the beginning of the Hellenistic Period during the reign of Alexander the Great. They speculate that these items may have been hidden in the cave by local residents who sought refuge there during the unrest that broke out following the death of Alexander the Great in 323 BC.”

Mr. Zakai, along with his father Reuven and their friend Lior Halony, had been exploring the cave, the exact location of which is being kept secret, two weeks ago. The group spent several hours navigating the narrow passages in the cave when Hen forced his way into a narrow niche and spotted the coins glinting in the light of his head torch. They promptly reported the discovery to the Unit for the Prevention of Antiquities Robbery at the IAA. Officials and archaeologists then returned to the cave last weekend and found considerable evidence suggesting that the caves had been inhabited by humans.
